Drivers have been told to follow the rules if they don't want to get caught out by new traffic cameras in Liverpool city centre.

The city council has installed the new traffic enforcement cameras to target drivers who flout certain road regulations, like driving through no entry zones or zones dedicated for buses and taxis.

Under the new powers, which will include the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, those waiting too long at yellow box junctions, banned turns and misuse of bus gates could face a fixed penalty charge notice (PCN).

The council turned the cameras on yesterday (Monday November 20) to coincide with the start of Road Safety Week. Those found flouting the road regulations by these cameras could face fines of up to £70. You can find all the locations of the cameras here.

Some drivers complained about the new cameras, with one claiming they are a new way "of screwing the people of Liverpool'. However others pointed out that as long as drivers follow the rules of the road they will be safe.

Commenting on Facebook. Nick Cheeseman-Woolerton said: "Funny how many people just can't follow the rules. Council won't get a penny if you just follow / understand the signs that have been up for years."

Paul Childs said: "So many negative comments from a measure that saves lives. If you don't want to get caught, don't speed. You'd soon change your mind if a member of your family was run over."

Guy Price said: "Fantastic. Hope they get the drink drivers as well."

One ECHO reader said: "Let's just concentrate on one of the new cameras (Ranelagh Place).

"For some time this has been no entry with only certain vehicles allowed (taxi's, buses etc) this restriction has been ignored and private cars just drive down Ranelagh street with no fear of receiving a ticket. Having signage alone does not work.

"Cameras are now in place as drivers have continuously ignored the rules and are now complaining that any more ignoring of signs/markings will result in a fine.

"I really don't understand the selfish attitude of many motorists in this city."

Another ECHO reader 'asjkhdkjhyv' said: "If you drive to the rules of the road, you won't get fined."
